DI Lessons/Ideas

  1. Teaching a historical novel such as Kate Chopin's The Awakening.

    1. Virtual field trip: Setting (Google maps -- Grand Isle, LA, New Orleans, etc.)

    Mores: web quest for what were considered acceptable behaviors for men and women. Discuss in class or as blog posting with personal connection - how things have changed.

    2. Biography of Kate Chopin (author) (webquest and wiki)

    3. Reading (chapters) with guiding questions.

    4. Discussion via blogs addressing guiding questions.

    5. Music of Frederic Chopin figures throughout the novel (watch videos of musicians playing Chopin).

    6. Discussion in class. Use exit slips and participation points/discussion rubric.

    7. Final project. Small group: Make a video of a scene such as Xtranormal (turn in a written script).

    Video or live scene from the novel(students act out with script.

    Individual projects: Draw the characters (research costumes) or make paper dolls. Draw a web showing the connections between the characters.

    8. Write a final response to the novel and unit including a reflection on learning.
